Honoring the Legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt: On Monday, Hillary spoke at the 8th Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee Luncheon:

"I am absolutely positive with every fiber of my being that we must elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden to be our President and Vice President on November 4...The biggest risk for America is four more years of the last eight years. The last thing I want - and I hope you agree - is to put mavericks in charge of the United States economy at this moment of need. Mavericks in Washington and on Wall Street got us into this mess. Let’s have some adult supervision again and pull ourselves out of it." Watch and read excerpts.

The Economic Rescue Package Was the First Step; We Have to Do More: At a press conference on Monday, Hillary told reporters:

"The rescue package passed last week was a crucial first step to prevent the economic troubles from deepening, but now we need to focus on helping Americans who are feeling the crunch of this economic crisis and get our economy back on the right track."

This week, Hillary continued promoting specific initiatives to ease the credit crunch and prevent additional job losses and other economic challenges from hitting Main Street:

* An E-Trust program protecting taxpayers by making transactions transparent

* Homeowners Mortgage Enterprise (HOME), modeled after the Great Depression-era Homeowners Loan Corporation (HOLC), to rewrite mortgages and reset terms so that creditworthy families would be able to keep their homes and make affordable payments

* The Emergency Stabilization Fund to make emergency loans and establish temporary lines of credit for small businesses, schools, and to help stabilize municipal bonds.

* Pressure on the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to approve a grant to allow New York State to assess the impact of the ongoing economic crisis on jobs in the region and plan a strategic response.

In recent days, McCain has "inaccurately compar[ed] his mortgage buy-up plan to the one proposed earlier this year by" HRC: "It's wrong to suggest the new McCain plan is what Senator Clinton proposed ," said Clinton spokesperson Kathleen Strand. "She and Senator Obama are focused on helping struggling homeowners and holding bank lenders responsible. . . Senator McCain's new plan calls for bailing out and rewarding irresponsible bank and mortgage lenders, while sticking taxpayers with the bill." Read more.

"Clinton Urges Women Not To Vote For Palin:" Clinton responds directly to a Westchester Journal News’ inquiry about Governor Sarah Palin as VP. Read more.

"I think that there are people who are excited by the fact that the Republicans have a woman on the ticket. I think that's a legitimate reason to be excited...The Democrats did it in 1984, Republicans got around to doing it in 2008. And there's reason for people to see that as a real milestone.

"But that's not a reason to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. You have to ask yourself, who is going to be better for you and your family? And in New York it's not even close. We will have such a better future if we have Democratic leadership back in the White House."

HRC at HRC: Filling in for Senator Biden Saturday, Hillary spoke at the Human Rights Campaign dinner where she "called McCain a 'mimic' of Bush, not a maverick." Read the AP story.

USA Today Must Read: Clinton goes to bat for Obama and party. Read more.

Hitting the Battleground Airwaves: On Thursday, Hillary hit the airwaves for a round of early vote interviews for Senator Obama and U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan in the battleground state North Carolina.

Mark Woodson (WECU, Greenville, NC): Senator Clinton, I know you have been crisscrossing the country campaigning for Senator Obama and other Democrats. Why is this election so important?

Hillary Clinton: This is such a turning point election. It is historic, unprecedented, it would have been in any event - but the recent downturn in the economy has brought it home to everyone.

You can’t turn away and ignore what is happening to jobs and incomes and home ownership and your bank accounts and your retirement accounts. It’s so important that we elect leadership that will be able to solve these problems. And that’s why I’m working so hard for Senator Obama - because he will bring the kind of leadership of competence and confidence and optimism that we desperately desperately need in our country. <![CDATA[A Day with Hillary]]> Fri, 10 Oct 2008 14:57:32 CDT In July, we launched an online contest to win dinner with Hillary. Leslie McQuistin from Tacoma, WA was our winner. As is the nature of a hectic campaign season, finding the perfect date for her and Hillary to meet was complicated. This past week, however, Leslie and her son Chris got the chance to sit down one-on-one with Hillary in Los Angeles, California. But that wasn’t all! Leslie and Chris also got the opportunity to accompany Hillary to an event in downtown Los Angeles and a fundraiser. I wanted to share with you a message from Leslie and photos of her trip:

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is a remarkable person who has lived life large as an intelligent, strong and caring person.

I decided that I would simply enjoy the experience of being in a political bubble for a day, stress free because I would not have to be on game like everyone else. As a supporter, I did not want to act like a fan, but then I decided it was OK to exhibit fan-like behavior (pictures and an autograph of her book), so that I could show my grandchildren. I want them to grow up knowing Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s story because, for one, I think she represents the highest level of feminism of our generation.
Her staff was very attentive, but I was really surprised when she went out of her way to engage my son and me in conversations during her very active day. It was a very long day for her, and yet, after the fundraising dinner, she took us into a private den area and talked with my son and me alone.

Senator Clinton is truly amazing on so many levels and I can’t help but believe that she will achieve even more greatness as she continues her journey, wherever it takes her. I was so lucky to have won this opportunity to spend some time with her and will always remember how splendid she was, whether thanking her Hispanic supporters, speaking at a high powered fundraising dinner or making space and time to know my son and myself on a more personal level.

Not only did Leslie and Chris get to meet Hillary, but also Senator John Kerry!

<![CDATA[HOTLINE: October 10, 2008]]> Fri, 10 Oct 2008 07:05:00 CDT <![CDATA[IN HER OWN WORDS: HILLARY CLINTON MAKES CLEAR CASE FOR OBAMA-BIDEN TICKET]]> Thu, 09 Oct 2008 16:14:21 CDT As the McCain/Palin campaign continues to try to distract voters from the issues that matter in this election, they are trying to use Hillary's words against her and Senators Obama and Biden. Hillary has made it very clear that there is only one choice for the American people who want real solutions and positive change in this election: Barack Obama and Joe Biden. In events across the country she has reminded voters of the stark contrast between McCain/Palin ticket and Obama/Biden ticket.

"The biggest risk for America is four more years of the last eight years. It is the economy. The last thing I want and I hope you agree is to put mavericks in charge of the United States economy at this moment of need. Mavericks in Washington and on Wall Street got us into this mess. Let’s have some adult supervision again and pull ourselves out of it." [Hillary Clinton, Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Luncheon, New York, NY, 10/6/08]

"Whether it is expanding Family and Medical Leave so that more people – men and women – can balance family and work in those difficult times when you’re under so much pressure. It needs to be expanded and protected. Barack Obama is for it. John McCain is against it. Whether it is universal healthcare. Quality, affordable healthcare for every single American. Barack Obama is for it and John McCain is against it. And whether it is a Supreme Court that will protect our rights and side with people who are disadvantaged who are disempowered or not. Barack Obama will appoint justices who will get back on the side of the constitution and our people and John McCain will not." [Hillary Clinton, Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Luncheon, New York, NY, 10/6/08]

"I don’t think that the McCain/Palin ticket offers the kind of leadership and changes that the people of Texas and the rest of our country deserve to see happen." [Hillary Clinton, press availability, McAllen, Texas, 10/3/08]

"On every issue, we have such stark differences with the Republican Party and with Senator McCain and I think anyone in Michigan who looks seriously at what this state needs to be prepared for the future can only vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden." [Hillary Clinton, Grand Ledge, MI, 9/27/08]

"John McCain has said that our economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn’t think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize social security and John McCain has promised tax breaks for the biggest corporations, not for hard working middleclass families right here in Ohio. The choice is clear and I know what choice I am making in November and I hope that you will make the same choice and vote for Barack Obama." [Hillary Clinton, Elyria, OH, 9/14/08]

"If you look at everything that’s going on in the world and what’s at stake in this election: No way, no how, no McCain and no Palin." [Hillary Clinton, multiple]

"On the one hand, we have Senator Obama offering the kind of positive change agenda that the country is desperate to have. On the other hand we have Senator McCain offering more of the same. It really would be a continuation of the policies that have failed us over the last 8 years. I am very convinced that when Americans actually ask themselves ‘what is at stake in this election for me and my family?’ there’s only one answer: If you are unsatisfied with the direction of our country – whether it be the economy or health care, or energy policy, or education, or college affordability, or Iraq, or literally anything else that’s in the news or on your minds – we need to be electing Senator Obama and that’s what I’m going to put all of my energy behind doing." [Hillary Clinton Press Availability, Kissimmee, FL, 9/8/08]

Dear Friend,

Hillary sure has been busy lately! After a weekend campaigning in California and Texas, Hillary went to New York to speak at the eighth annual Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee luncheon. Speaking to a packed room, Hillary called this a turning point election - and reminded us what it might feel like November 5th if we fall short. Hillary reminded everyone what is at stake in this election, especially for women, and how important it is we do everything we can to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden this fall.

I wanted to share some highlights with you and hope you will take a look.

<![CDATA[Hillary hits the trail in Texas and California]]> Wed, 08 Oct 2008 18:32:17 CDT This weekend, Hillary was on the trail in Texas and California. She sure was busy! In Texas, Hillary held events for Senate candidate Rick Noriega in McAllen and Congressional candidate Henry Cuellar in Laredo. She also held a HillPAC event in San Antonio before heading to California for two Obama fundraisers in San Jose and Los Angeles.

While in California, Hillary also had a chance to meet with volunteers from the Hillary Sent Me! program. “Hillary Sent Me!” is our grassroots mobilization effort designed to galvanize Hillary Clinton’s supporters and others across the country to help send Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden to the White House, but also to work on behalf of this year’s critical Democratic races. Here are some photos from her trip!

WASHINGTON - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton has raised more than $8 million for former rival Barack Obama's presidential campaign since July and plans to barnstorm the country for even more cash, as the New York senator works to show she is aggressively helping the candidate who cut short her White House bid.

"I am using every tool that I have to help Democrats win," Clinton told USA TODAY. She was between fundraising events in Texas and California that brought in another $1.5 million for Obama and congressional candidates on Friday and Saturday.

Later this month, Clinton will headline Obama fundraisers in Chicago, Philadelphia and Little Rock along with 11 events to raise money for Democratic congressional candidates and state parties.

She is stepping up efforts to get more Democratic women elected to the Senate. On Friday, she issued an e-mail fundraising appeal for Louisiana incumbent Mary Landrieu and challengers Kay Hagan, who is locked in a tight battle against Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole in North Carolina, and former New Hampshire governor Jeanne Shaheen, who is engaged in a repeat of her close 2002 race with GOP Sen. John Sununu.

The former first lady said in the interview late Friday that her goal is straightforward: "We have a lot to repair in America, and I believe that Democratic leadership is essential to fixing the damage that we are going to inherit."

Clinton, who came closer to claiming a major party's presidential nomination than any woman before her, declined to discuss whether another White House race was in her future.

"I'm looking forward to going to the White House someday and standing there when President Obama signs a bill guaranteeing quality, affordable health care for every American," she said, citing an issue that was a signature of her campaign.

Democratic strategist Tad Devine said Clinton's stature will grow in the Senate no matter the outcome on Election Day because she garnered about 18 million votes in her presidential bid.

Clinton stands to become "the most important woman in American politics" if Democrats win on Nov. 4, he said.

Helping to raise the money to aid Obama and increase Democratic majorities in Congress only enhances that standing, Devine added, because "delivering resources to campaigns is probably the single-most important and difficult thing you can do in politics."

Clinton has hit 40 campaign events for Obama in battleground states from New Hampshire to Nevada in the past two months.

Her husband campaigned in Florida last week. "Both Bill and I are doing all we can to reach the people who are not already convinced," Clinton said.

Click here to read the full article.

The Clintons' efforts come amid lingering signs of unrest among her still-loyal supporters. One top Clinton fundraiser, investment executive Lynn Forester de Rothschild, announced last month she was supporting Republican nominee John McCain. She called Obama and other top Democrats in Congress "too far to the left."

Clinton rejected the idea of further defections from her camp. "The vast majority of people who voted for me will vote for Sen. Obama," she said. "They understand that … we desperately need a Democratic administration to take the reins of the economy and turn it around."

Alexander Heckler, a Fort Lauderdale lawyer who raised more than $100,000 for Clinton, said talk of dissension between the Clinton and Obama fundraising camps is overrated.

He said he contributed $2,300 to Obama at a Sept. 19 fundraiser in Miami and has committed to raising at least $250,000 for the Illinois senator at Clinton's urging.

"We are all very united," he said.

Clinton still owed about $9 million to her campaign vendors at the end of August, despite Obama's appeal to his top fundraisers to help retire the debt. She vowed to work to repay the vendors, but insisted her priority is her party.

"With a month to go until Election Day," she said, "our energies have to be focused on persuading people to support Democrats."

<![CDATA[A Special Bond]]> Mon, 06 Oct 2008 10:28:35 CDT

Dear Friend,

Democratic women in the United States Senate share a special bond. We crack that glass ceiling a little more every time one of us is sworn in, and we work hard to support each other and to make sure our number keeps growing.
Help Kay, Mary, and Jeanne
So I hope you'll join me in supporting three wonderful women running for the U.S. Senate this year. Kay Hagan in North Carolina, Mary Landrieu, running for reelection to the Senate from Louisiana, and Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire are all running very strong campaigns. Their elections will take us a big step closer to a filibuster-proof Senate.

We need these three women in the Senate to help me fight for the issues you and I care about like health care and strengthening our economy.

Help Kay, Mary, and Jeanne win their Senate races on November 4 -- make a contribution via HillPAC today!

I know these women; and I know that can make a real difference for all Americans. We are also going to work really hard on many of these issues that matter to so many women. Together, we'll lead in the Senate on the issues that women face daily -- unequal pay, affordable health care for their families, and reproductive rights.

Let me tell you a little more about the races. In North Carolina, Kay Hagan is running a great race and some polls even show her ahead. Kay will invest in helping families stay in their homes, reducing foreclosures, and finding innovative new ways to stabilize neighborhoods. She will seek public-private partnerships to renovate neighborhoods and turn foreclosed properties into affordable rental or ownership units.

Mary Landrieu has been working her heart out for the people of Louisiana, still focused on Katrina recovery three years later while her opponents are doing everything they can to knock her out of her Senate seat. Senator Landrieu is spearheading efforts to rewrite federal disaster laws, which are unsuited to deal with larger disasters like Hurricane Katrina and largely ignore communities that host disaster evacuees.

And Jeanne Shaheen is criss-crossing the battleground state of New Hampshire, working hard in a race that is one of our top pick-up opportunities. Jeanne and I both have a long record of advocating for expanding children's healthcare. While Governor, Jeanne launched the New Hampshire's Children's Health Insurance Program, which has provided affordable health insurance to tens of thousands of New Hampshire children.

Together, along with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, we're going to set a bold new course for this nation. That's why I'm personally committed to helping these candidates win in November. And I hope you'll join me in giving them your full support.

Help these amazing women win in November -- contribute to Kay, Mary, and Jeanne today!

If we keep working, we'll keep winning.

Thank you for everything,
Hillary

<![CDATA[Senator Clinton Calls for Swift Action on Economic Crisis]]> Wed, 01 Oct 2008 17:54:14 CDT

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton today called for swift action on the bipartisan proposal to address the growing economic crisis. In remarks on the Senate floor, Senator Clinton described the plan as a flawed but necessary compromise and warned of escalating economic damage far beyond Wall Street if Congress fails to act. Senator Clinton underscored that todays vote must be just the beginning of what needs to be done and laid out goals for further action to address the underlying causes of the current crisis. She proposed steps to protect taxpayers, ensure transparency and accountability, aid homeowners facing foreclosure, and pursue broad economic reforms. <![CDATA[Hillary on the Senate Floor]]> Wed, 01 Oct 2008 17:46:49 CDT Today Hillary was on the Senate floor speaking about the bipartisan legislation addressing the economic crisis. Watch her speech below or read the full transcript.

Thank you Mr. President. Thank you very much, and I appreciate the extraordinary work that has been done with respect to the rescue package, led in a bipartisan fashion which has certainly produced significant changes in the original request that came to the Congress from the Treasury Department. And tonight we will vote on legislation none of us wish we were considering and none of us can afford to see fail. The costs of inaction are far too great. We are already seeing the consequences of a freezing credit market that will only worsen.

I hear across my state of New York, small businesses are struggling to find affordable loans to keep their doors open and their inventory stocked. Even larger businesses are being pushed to the breaking point throughout the country, the impact of this credit crisis is beginning to be felt, with students who are seeing the sources of student loans drying up, interest rates on car payments rising, families who had saved up and acted responsibly seeing higher mortgage rates, shrinking their dream of home ownership.

Our economy runs on credit, and underlying that credit is trust. Both the credit and the trust is running out. Essentially what we are doing here in an intangible way is restoring trust and confidence in a very tangible way: helping to restore credit. Banks will refuse to lend to businesses and even to one another. Investors continue to withdraw into the safest if investments, treasury bills, even cash. Tens of thousands of jobs in New York have been lost and a study this morning projected that New York alone would lose at least 120,000 jobs.

Now I think we are here in some respects because we failed to tackle a home mortgage crisis, and now we are facing a market crisis. If we fail to tackle the market crisis, we risk an even deeper economic crisis. I don’t think any of us want to see irresponsibility on Wall Street compounded by ineffectiveness in Washington. That’s why we must act, even as we do so with regret and reservations, because we have little choice.

The proposal we are considering is far from perfect, but it is a far cry from the original plan sent over by the Treasury Department that installed virtually unlimited powers in the hands of the Treasury Secretary. As I said when we first examined that original three-page proposal, we needed a plan that included checks and balances, not a blank check.

And thanks to the leadership here in the Senate and in the House, we have negotiated through the Congress, on a bipartisan basis, a better alternative that installs taxpayer protections, asserts oversight, and maintains greater accountability. As is the case very often in effective compromises, no one is happy. But we cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good, or in this case, the enemy of what’s necessary. But as we vote for this proposal tonight, we must do so considering what steps we will take next.

On the floor at this moment are three of the leaders who shaped this, under the very able leadership of Chairman Dodd, and the chief Republican negotiator, Senator Gregg, and of course the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman Baucus.

But I think we all recognize that this is not the end but the beginning of what we must do. And I believe there are three big goals that we will have to address even after we pass the Rescue Package tonight here in the Senate and send it over to the House.

First, we must address the home mortgage crisis. For two years, I and others have called for action as wave after wave of defaults and foreclosures crashed against communities and the broader economy. We are not yet through the woods. Millions of mortgages are underwater or under specter of adjustable rates set to rise.

I am proposing what we're calling The Homeowners Mortgage Enterprise, an acronym obviously spelling HOME, to rewrite mortgages and reset terms so that creditworthy, responsible families can keep their homes and keep making affordable payments. Through such a HOME program, we'd also be able to consider freezing adjustable mortgage rates and even placing short term moratoriums on foreclosures.

When our country enacted a similar program in the Great Depression, we saved one million homes without costing the taxpayers a dime. In fact, the program ended up with a surplus. And only by rewriting the terms of the debt held by families whose mortgages can be salvaged will we recoup a great deal of the value of the debt we are purchasing from Wall Street firms.

I also believe we need to consider a real tax credit for homebuyers to jump start the housing market. This has been an effective tool in the past and it can be an effective tool again. We have too much supply and too little demand, and getting the liquidity that will be injected into the credit markets to work its way through the entire economy will take time. I think we need not only a supply of liquidity but an increase in demand, particularly in the housing market.

Second, we must be vigilant on behalf of taxpayers, putting in place safeguards so the Treasury is maximizing the value of the assets purchased with taxpayer dollars. We need to have the flexibility to ensure we're not just subsidizing investors and executives, but we should tie this debt relief to strong recapitalization requirements and greater accountability.

I also want to be sure that companies do not take undue advantage of this program and sell securities to the Treasury with one stroke of the pen and claim a deduction for the losses on those assets with the other—in essence, double dipping, dumping their bad assets on taxpayers, and getting a tax break as well.

I'm proposing we build on a very creative provision in the bill before us, and establish an e-TRUST Program. That would stand for Transparent Rules Used to Safeguard Taxpayers. In the bill, there's a provision that transactions be put on the Internet. I want to ensure that the assets brought—bought and sold by the Treasury Department are reported online in real time, so any American can log on and see how their tax dollars are being spent. All assets bought and sold must be available on a publicly accessible website that discloses the buyers, sellers and values of these assets. The American people are buying these securities, and so the American people must have easy access to their portfolio.

It's also important for the American people to understand that lying behind these complex transactions, with all kinds of long names that you read in the newspaper—collateralized debt obligations, and credit default swaps and all the other, you know, words that are used to in some way explain the complex financial transactions that brought to us this place—standing behind are real assets. There are real homes owned by real people on real land in real communities across America. So we want to know how those securities that stand in for these real assets are being traded, bought, and sold, and we want to be sure that we realize for the taxpayer the benefit of these transactions.

And third, I think there is general agreement we must pursue broader reforms. That is one of the lessons of this turmoil. I know that Chairman Dodd and others will be holding hearings to try to untangle how we got to where we are. We know we have to rein in executive compensation by giving shareholders a greater role and eliminating loopholes that allow boards to conceal the value of salary packages. We've got to end the quarter-by-quarter mentality in which long term prosperity is subverted by short term stock valuations. And obviously, we have to end the culture of recklessness in our financial markets endorsed by an ideology of indifference in Washington.

As the American people invest in these companies, I think we should ask the companies to invest in the American people. I think we should consider requiring financial institutions participating in this Treasury plan to create an American Priorities Fund to be part of their portfolios, to invest in clean energy, infrastructure, mass transit, manufacturing, education, and other public goods and goals that would be well served by greater private investment.

Along with the rescue package will be a number of tax credits that will be passed by the Senate tonight. Again, Chairman Baucus has done yeoman's work getting these tax credits put together. The Senate supported them before in it as a fix for the Alternative Minimum Tax, energy production tax credits. In fact, we will be stimulating the economy for Main Street while we pass this rescue package for our credit markets. I think that's the right combination.

But we need to do more. Instead of toxic securities that nobody can understand, are so complex and lack all transparency and accountability, banks should be investing in clean energy facilities in Buffalo, or new auto manufacturing plants in Detroit to build more fuel-efficient cars. We should be repairing our bridges, our roads, our tunnels. We should investing in high-speed rail and making sure that Amtrak is just not a second-class railroad, but competes with the best anywhere in the world.

I think, Mr. President, that the agenda before the Congress is a very important one for our country. We cannot continue to shuttle from crisis to crisis. This is a sink-or-swim moment for our country and we cannot merely catch our breath. We must swim for the shores. And we must do so together, not only as a united Congress, but as a united country. There's so much work to be done in America, so many investments that will make us richer and stronger and safer and smarter, that will enable us to look into the eyes of our children and grandchildren and tell them that we're leaving our country and in as good, in fact, better shape than when we found it. At this moment we can't say that. But I am absolutely sure, based on the bipartisan cooperation that we saw on this bill in responding to a real crisis, that we will see more of that in the months ahead. Our new President will certainly demand it of us, but we should be demanding it of ourselves, and demonstrate to the American people that the United States Congress will lead the way into a much more confident and optimistic future for America.

]]> <![CDATA[My Hillary Sent Me! Weekend]]> Wed, 01 Oct 2008 15:51:34 CDT Joan F. Ashwell is a Hillary Sent Me! volunteer.

It was so exciting to see the great turnout in Manchester, NH, for the kick-off event of the "Hillary Sent Me!" campaign. My husband and I campaigned for Hillary all through the primary election and made friends all over New Hampshire. It was great to see so many of them come out on a cloudy, rainy day to campaign for Barack Obama and Joe Biden and our exciting candidate for the US Senate, Jeanne Shaheen.

People absolutely loved getting the "Hillary Sent Me!" buttons. Most of the canvassers were already covered with an impressive collection of stickers and buttons but no matter who they supported in the Primary, they wanted to add this new button. I’ve been out canvassing since the Convention, but it really is more fun when I can say, "Hillary Sent Me!"

Before we headed out to knock on doors, Hillary called in to the Obama headquarters to talk about what she and others are doing to make sure we elect the Obama/Biden ticket and a Democratic Congress. She ended with a real campaign rally-call to action that left people cheering, clapping and eager to hit the streets. As the first 120 or so people headed out the door, two buses arrived from Massachusetts with more people for canvassing.

I stuffed several dozen buttons in my pockets before I drove back to the New Hampshire Seacoast, where I live. I’ve been sending emails out to my friends from Hillary’s campaign and inviting them to come canvass this weekend and get a "Hillary Sent Me!" button.

PS: I was so excited when I heard about this campaign initiative that I immediately signed up at www.HillPac.com. A couple of days before the kick-off event, I found out I was the first person in the country to sign up! I hope you’ll sign up if you haven’t already. You can also click here to print out a button if you’re not near a campaign office that has them!

<![CDATA[Senator Clinton Calls for Swift Action on Bipartisan Compromise to Address Economic Crisis]]> Wed, 01 Oct 2008 01:00:00 CDT <![CDATA[Hillary on the Financial Crisis]]> Tue, 30 Sep 2008 16:31:05 CDT In a conference call today with media, Hillary discussed the importance of passing the bailout legislation. She said that we needed to "understand the benefits of this unprecedented market intervention versus the cost of inaction."

Hillary helped explain what was at stake by telling everyone: "...if nothing is done, we will see small businesses that cannot continue to keep their doors open because they cannot get the loans that they need for inventory and other important business expenses. Even larger businesses I’m hearing from are stretched to near the breaking point. A lot of our businesses depend on credit every single day, and they’re finding that credit very difficult if not impossible to find and afford."

Hillary went on to explain that:

"...what we have negotiated through the Congress on a bipartisan basis a better alternative that installed taxpayer protections, asserted oversight and accountability, and came up with the checks and balances we should have had rather than the blank check…. This bill that was voted on yesterday is a compromise among the Bush Administration, the Democratic and Republican leadership. You’re not going to find anyone who believes that this bill is perfect. Many of us regret deeply and very much resist having to bail out those who we believe contributed mightily to the problems we’re in. But there is no choice."

Hillary has always been a true leader on economic issues. She is urging everyone to:

"...take a deep breath. The Congress is not in session because of the Jewish New Year, so everyone has a chance to think hard and maybe cool off a little from the emotion and the pressure of the last two weeks. And we get back to Washington starting tomorrow and do what we have to do to try to stabilize not only our nation, but the entire world for the benefit of everyone."

As always Hillary is standing up for everyone one of us and making us proud. If you would like to listen to her call today, click here.

Hillary Sent Me! is a special grassroots program designed to mobilize volunteers to head to key battleground states to help elect Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Democrats up and down the ticket this fall.

The program kicked-off this weekend in Manchester, New Hampshire where volunteers gathered at the Manchester offices of Senators Obama and Biden to canvass and make calls for the Democratic ticket and to campaign for Jeanne Shaheen who is now running for Senate.

Hillary welcomed volunteers via telephone. “I could not be prouder than I am today to have so many of you who are part of the Hillary Sent Me! effort to fan out across our country, and that the kickoff event is here in New Hampshire,” she said.

Despite bad weather and rain, nobody let it get them down and everyone was out knocking on doors. See some pictures below.

* With America focused on Wall Street this week, Hillary appeared on six television programs to discuss her “Principles for Action - Rescuing Wall Street and Main Street.” Click here to watch highlights from her interviews.

Hillary's principles: We must take bold action on the mortgage crisis, represent the interests of taxpayers, and reform Wall Street and curb corporate abuse. “The Democrats inherited a troubled economy in 1993 – we fixed it then and we can fix it again.”

Read more in Senator Clinton’s WSJ op-ed: “Let’s Keep People in Their Homes.”

* Hillary kicked off her new grassroots organizing campaign, Hillary Sent Me!, which already has thousands of volunteers signed up, only one week after launching.

The first stop for volunteers is New Hampshire this weekend to campaign for Senators Obama and Biden and to help Gov. Jeanne Shaheen in her tough Congressional race against incumbent Senator John Sununu. It’s not too late to sign up for this weekend or upcoming trips: www.HillPAC.com.

See the great blue button here.

*HillPAC debuted its candidate emails spotlighting Democrats around the country who need our help: Rep. Ed Towns, Rep. Dina Titus, and Rep. Chris Carney. Find out more at www.HillPAC.com.

* This week in the Senate: In addition to proposing her economic “Principles for Action,” Hillary hosted her seventh annual New York Farm Day reception at the Capitol. Last Friday, Hillary participated in the opening of the Rochester office of employment agency, Adecco, where she helped secure 200 jobs: "Adecco is in the jobs business and so are we. It's all about helping to create more economic opportunities and bring new jobs particularly to Upstate New York.” Read more. On Tuesday, Hillary joined Rep. John Hall to “gather support for legislation that would end the colossal backlog of veterans' disability claims.” Read more.

* This weekend: Pending the Senate schedule, Hillary will travel to Michigan to campaign on behalf of Senator Obama. She has stops in Flint, Lansing and Grand Rapids. She then heads to New Jersey to attend a fundraiser for Senator Frank Lautenberg.

* Last Monday: Hillary hosted a New York fundraiser for the Obama Victory Fund raising over $400,000, contributing to the more than $5 million Hillary has already raised for Senators Obama and Biden.

* Last Tuesday: Hillary hosted a very successful fundraising reception at her home in Washington DC for the Women's Senate Network of the DSCC.

* Last weekend: Hillary traveled to Kentucky to campaign for Senate candidate Bruce Lunsford. Read about her “warm welcome” in Pikeville here. “Shannon Hogg, 33, of Whitesburg, said before Clinton’s speech she’s for Lunsford but wasn’t sure about Obama. Clinton changed her mind. ‘Yeah, she got me. I’m voting for Obama.’”

* On tap for next week: Hillary heads to California to campaign for Senators Obama, Biden and other Democrats running in critical races.

What Else?

* In Case You Missed It: In an op-ed appearing last Friday, Hillary Clinton and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards argue: “Everyone who believes that women should have full access to medical care should make their voices heard.” Read “Blocking Care for Women” here.

* Thursday, Hillary and Washington Senator Patty Murray sent a letter to HHS Secretary Leavitt signed by 27 Senators to express their serious concern about a proposed regulation that would undermine women's health and access to family planning. Yesterday marks the final day of the HHS public comment period for this proposed rule. Clinton and Murray will also be sending a petition signed by tens of thousands opposing the HHS regulations.

There is a broad consensus that Congress must act to stave off deeper turmoil on Wall Street. Irrespective of the final agreement yet to be reached, there are several principles that must be part of a broader reform effort that begins this week and continues in the coming months.

This is not just a financial crisis; it's an economic crisis. Therefore, the solutions we pursue cannot simply stabilize the markets. We must also deal with the interconnected economic challenges that set the stage for this crisis -- and reverse the failed policies that allowed a potential crisis to become a real one.

First, we must address the skyrocketing rates of mortgage defaults and foreclosures that have buffeted the economy and ignited the credit crisis. Two million homeowners carry mortgages worth more than their homes. They hold $3 trillion in mortgage debt. Nearly three million adjustable-rate mortgages are scheduled for a rate increase in the next two years. Another wave of foreclosures looms.

I've proposed a new Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC), to launch a national effort to help homeowners refinance their mortgages. The original HOLC, launched in 1933, bought mortgages from failed banks and modified the terms so families could make affordable payments while keeping their homes. The original HOLC returned a profit to the Treasury and saved one million homes. We can save roughly three times that many today. We should also put in place a temporary moratorium on foreclosures and freeze rate hikes in adjustable-rate mortgages. We've got to stem the tide of failing mortgages and give the markets time to recover.

The time for ideological, partisan arguments against these actions is over. For years, the calls to provide borrowers an affordable opportunity to avoid foreclosure as a means of preventing wider turmoil were dismissed as government intrusion into the private marketplace. My proposals over the past two years were derided as too much, too soon. Now we are forced to reckon with too little, too late.

As a result, the home-mortgage crisis slowly eroded the value of debt instruments upon which Wall Street firms were depending. That is how this house of borrowed cards began to fall. If we do not take action to address the crisis facing borrowers, we'll never solve the crisis facing lenders. These problems go hand in hand. And if we are going to take on the mortgage debt of storied Wall Street giants, we ought to extend the same help to struggling, middle-class families.

Second, American taxpayers should have a voice and a stake in the resolution of this market crisis. If the Treasury proposal is enacted in its current form, the American government would assume enough financial risk to become the majority shareholder in the companies rescued by taxpayer dollars.

The American people are bearing the risk and therefore deserve to reap the rewards of a shared equity model. And mortgage securities bought by taxpayers must be valued accurately at prices disclosed in real time, with checks and reporting requirements to prevent abuse.

Third, taxpayers are being asked to bear an unparalleled degree of financial risk. We cannot allow taxpayers to take on this burden so that Wall Street and the Bush administration can hit the "reset button." This historic intervention demands a historic shift in priorities: an end to the broken culture on Wall Street, and the broken economic policies in Washington.

Corporations that will benefit must be held accountable, not only to large shareholders but also to the American people, who are rightly tired of business as usual: short-term profit at the expense of long-term viability; lax oversight and regulation; obscene bonuses and golden parachutes regardless of performance; reckless risk-taking that has placed the markets in jeopardy; rewards for foreclosing on middle-class families and selling mortgages designed to fail; and outsourcing good jobs to serve short-term stock prices instead of America's long-term economic health.

This is a sink-or-swim moment for America. We cannot simply catch our breath. We've got to swim for the shores. We must address the conditions that set the stage for the turmoil unfolding on Wall Street, or we will find ourselves lurching from crisis to crisis. Just as Wall Street must once again look further than the quarterly report, our nation must as well.
